Choosing Van Wheels

Upgrading the wheels on a campervan can improve appearance, handling, and sometimes payload compatibility. It’s important to choose wheels designed for the weight of a van rather than just what fits the bolt pattern.

Common sizes

Popular campervan sizes include:

16-inch – common on many medium and large vans.
17-inch – popular upgrade that balances looks and ride comfort.
18-inch – sportier appearance but usually lower-profile tyres.
20-inch – mainly for show vans; can reduce ride comfort and increase tyre costs.

Steel Wheels

Pros:

Typically lower cost compared to alloys.
Very durable and easier to repair if bent.
Better suited to harsh commercial use.
Often available with very high load ratings.

Cons:

Heavier than alloys.
More basic appearance.
Can rust if paint is damaged.

Alloy Wheels

Pros:

Lighter, which some people feel can slightly improve steering experience.
Better heat dissipation for brakes.
Wide range of designs and finishes.
Can significantly improve the camper’s appearance.

Cons:

More expensive than steel.
Can crack rather than bend after severe impacts.
Some decorative alloys are not suitable for heavy campervans.

First of all don’t get fooled by the name, they converted my Renault trafic and I saw plenty of different vans in the workshop. It’s a family run business run by people who really care about what they are doing. They provide useful advice and guide you through the whole process. I wanted to do part of the conversion myself then I changed my mind about what I can do a thousand times and they accommodated me fully. The quality of the conversion is really top notch, especially the furniture that they cut at their workshop feels premium. I’d definitely recommend for your first van conversion.

Booked in with The Dub Hut, turned up when they opened and they looked at it straight away and within 2 hours, I was back on the road with the pop top fully fixed. Spent the two hours being offered teas, coffees, waters and chatting with the staff about van conversions. Really nice bunch of people and great workmanship.
